Question Corner Extract: ACCAQ Quarterly Newsletter
Q: I've been on methotrexate for some time and it seems to keep my Crohn's in check but someone else I know with Crohn's who is on methotrexate has stopped taking it as their doctor said they need a rest from it. Is that wise and is it necessary to have a break?
A: The evidence is that if one stops this sort of medication then one is more likely to relapse. However, this has to be balanced against potential liver complications with long term use of methotrexate. I personally advise patients to stay with methotrexate unless there are other risk factors for liver disease. These are in particular being overweight, diabetes or excessive alcohol.
